Application of LOTO scheme
Primary, secondary, stored or separate energy sources must be locked for service and maintenance
Service
and maintenance, repair, preventive maintenance, improvement and
installation activities of machines, equipment, processes and wiring.
These activities require a machine, device, process, or line, or its
components, to be in a "zero-energy state." Personnel performing these
activities must use Lockout tagout in accordance with the protocol. When Lockout/Tagout of a machine, device, or process cannot be used, an alternative method should be used.
An alternative can be used in the following situations
The LOTO plan is not feasible
The work behavior is routine, repetitive, and integrated with the production process
Minor modifications or adjustments to tools, assembly, commissioning, part positioning, or cleaning, do not require Lockout/ tagout if the following conditions do not exist
Bypassing or moving shields or safety devices
Displacement of any principal part in the operating area of a machine, equipment, process or circuit
No LOTO alternatives are scheduled for the task
No task-specific training is provided
