Why a LOTO Box System is Essential

A LOTO box (or lockout station) is the physical hub of the lockout program. It organizes and standardizes the process. Here’s why this system is so crucial:

1. Prevents Unexpected Startup (The Most Critical Reason)

This is the primary goal. Without LOTO, a machine could be started by someone who is unaware that a colleague is inside or has their hands in the machinery. This can lead to:

A physical lock on an energy isolation device (like a circuit breaker or valve) is a simple, positive, and undeniable barrier to operation.

2. Protects Multiple Workers (Group Lockout)

• The System: Each worker places their personal lock on the LOTO box. A single group lock from the box is then placed on the energy source.
